MOVIEW: VEDALAM VS THOONGA VANAM

Don’t underestimate that I won’t watch Tamil Movies. I’m a Malaysian so I watched all kind of movies. MOVIEW this time is quite different because there is a comparison of two new released Tamil movies starred by top Tamil actors,  ‘Uzhagu Nayagan’, Kamal Hassan and Ultimate Star, Ajith Kumar.

Storyline.

Vedalam just another typical tamil movie where the hero fought a lot of villains with extreme violence. It’s story line also does not bring any novel plot as it is just a revenge of the hero to the villains as the villains murdered his adopted family. On the other hand, Thoonga Vanam steps further by trying to change the storyline which is much more like an English movie where Kamal Hassan’s son were kidnapped and Kamal Hassan using variety strategies to save his son. Simple storyline yet completes the movie. Hats off to the director as he portrays actress, Trisha in a very bad shape as she fought a death match with Kamal Hassan. IT IS VERY RARE TO SEE AN ACTRESS FIGHTING IN A TAMIL MOVIE!

Setting

Disappointingly, Thoonga Vanam’s setting is inside a pub. The whole movie is running in and out in the pub. So we will get bored with the similar settings.

Villians

Vedalam again potrayed ordinary Villians which is quite scary but all of them are quite handsome as well. In constrast, Thoonga Vanam has villains with sense of humor especially Prakash Raj who can make us laugh and made the movie much more interesting.

New and Old

I will say both movies are quite failure compare to Kamal and Ajith’s old movie, Papanasam and Arabam.

Strengths

Vedalam:
-          Quite sentimental and there is a message showing that money is not everything and we need to protect women.
-          Ajith is a great actor after all.
-          Technology used by villains to track Ajith is quite interesting but it is just shown for a short period.

Thoonga Vanam:

-          Trisha’s fighting scene is a jumping stone for this movie.
-          A bit different story line with a similar setting which follows Hollywood movie.
-          A good message for family.

Weaknesses

Vedalam:

-          -Ajith’s acting is almost like psycho does not portray a good image of a hero!
-         - Violence is too much even after it was censored.
-          -Just an ordinary story line
-          -Typical tamil movie!

Thongaa Vanam

-          -The more you watch the boring it gets! I even saw someone is sleeping in the theatre.
-          -Great actress Asha Sarath who acted well in Papanasam as a police officer is not used well for this movie.
-         - There is one toilet scene that is too dirtily shown in this film.

Overall, Moview shows both film is not that great. Yet Thongaa Vanam stands one step futher compared to Vedalam. Thus, Thoonga Vanam earns 6.5 stars and Vedalam gains 6 stars from 10 stars.
